It’s been a few months since I had a short overnight stop in St. Helier, Jersey and last week I returned for another slightly longer trip, albeit with work, but I did have time to explore the tiny island. I’m lucky to be staying again at the Jersey Grand hotel on the esplanade, it’s a great place to stay, and wonderful waking up each morning to see Elizabeth Castle from the breakfast table.
I love the Jersey French-Cornish accents floating around the streets. It has the feel both of a town in the south of England, and of one in northern France. Loads of cafes with outdoor seating, gorgeous beaches, old maritime buildings and great food. After work on my first day I took my brand new Canon 100D out to catch the evening light.
St Helier is a small town, and it’s easy to see it all in an afternoon. On my final day I hired a car and took a drive over to the west of the island (all of 5 miles away) to see some of the beaches. There’s a fantastic variety of beaches, I imagine they must be much busier in summer, but they were largely empty when I visited!
Jersey is a great place to visit as an alternative to France or northern Europe. It has culture, sophistication, great food and beaches to satiate the appetite of most travellers. Hopefully I will be back again in the not too distant future!
